The *driving gears* are brass gears mounted on the main drive shaft of the ToneGenerator. The driving gears* are connected to the drive shaft through coil damping springs to absorb the pulsations of the SynchronousMotor. There are 48 *driving gears, one for each pair of ?DrivenGears. It is the integer GearRatio between the driven and driving gears which generate a very close approximation to the equal tempered scale.
